Tuesday Talk!
Hi!! Happy Tuesday!
I hope your week is off to a great start!!
Sooo...if you have been reading my blog for awhile you know how much I love finding simple ways to make household chores easier. I use Dawn Dish Detergent for ALL of my stains- it's amazing stuff!! And I use white vinegar regularly to wash my towels!!
Well...I am embarrassed to even admit this...but the shower in our master bathroom was (it's not anymore :) SO dirty. It was really gross. We are renting our current home and everything is at the point where it needs to be replaced- it's just an older shower. On top of that, Aaron and I have not done a good job keeping up with cleaning it and...yeah...it was gross. So anyway- it was such a mess that I knew just a regular store bought shower cleaner was not going to do the trick on getting it super clean. So, of course, I google "DIY shower cleaners" and found this blog post: "How to Make Ugly Soap Scum, Mildew and Water Marks disappear like Magic."
UM. DONE. Exactly what I was looking for...a MAGICAL cleaning solution to breathe life back into my shower- HA!
Well...wouldn't you know- guess what the two ingredients in the magical soap scum/mildew/water marks cleaning solution are???
YUP.
Dawn Dish Detergent and White Vinegar!!!
To make the solution- all you have to do is: pour one cup blue Dawn into a 32-ounce spray bottle (1/2 cup Dawn if you are using a 16-ounce bottle). Fill the bottle the rest of the way with your white vinegar. Apply sprayer top; shake gently to mix!
I am SO EXCITED to report that this cleaning solution is in fact...MAGICAL!
My shower is sparkly clean!! It definitely took some elbow grease and a good scrub brush along with using the dawn/vinegar solution to get all the soap scum and water marks off the shower door and walls..but I am SO happy with how well it cleaned our yucky shower!!
I would have taken before/after pictures...but of course- I didn't. HA! I am the worst at remembering to do that!!
Since making this amazing cleaning solution, I have become pretty interested on researching other "recipes" for DIY home cleaners. I feel like I spend SO much money on cleaning supplies for the house...and if I can make them myself for a cheaper price AND have them be a safer/more natural product- well- I am all about that!
The next cleaner I plan on making is this disinfecting solution! I have all the ingredients except vodka :) I am making my husband pick that up for me...because yeah...don't feel like walking into the liquor store with 5 kids to buy a big handle of vodka. HA! Can you imagine me telling the cashier that it was for a "project" and not for me to drink??? Pretty sure he wouldn't believe me!!! HAHA!
Anyway- cleanmama.net is one of my favorite website- she has SO many great ideas, printables and "recipes" for DIY cleaning solutions. My goal over the next few months is to get rid of all our store bought cleaning solutions and replace them with homemade/natural solutions. I will keep you posted as I do this and let you know what I think about them!!
I would love to know- do you DIY any of your household cleaners?
If so- share your "recipe" with me!!
Hope you have the BEST day and Happy Cleaning!! :)

I have seen the dawn/vinegar recipe before but haven't tried it!! So happy to know it works!!
ReplyDeleteYes please keep
Us posted on your homemade cleaning supplies! I need to do the same:)
It works great!! Definitely give it a try!! :)
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear it worked well! I will definitely give it a try =)
ReplyDeleteI love the dawn/vinegar combo. It is a little concerning how much I use it for! Haha!
ReplyDeleteI also just started using white vinegar with some essential oils as an all natural fabric softener and love it.
I am part of Laundry Love and Cleaning Science facebook group. They called it "Dawniger" over there and people were crazy about it for a while. It fell out of popularity because suddenly the admins were saying people should not make it anymore due to reports from group members. I think people's premixed solutions bottles were exploding eventually and getting in their eyes or something serious enough that suddenly no one was recommending it anymore. Just an FYI to be careful.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting!! I was just telling my mom about your Dawn stain remover so now I've got to try your shower cleaner. I'm excited to see what other fun recipes you come up with for cleaners because they are really pricey. The only cleaner that I make is carpet cleaner. I use oxyclean and hot water. One scoop of the oxyclean and a bowl full of hot water. Mix until the powder is dissolved and then scrub your carpet stains with them. Cheaper than carpet cleaner, smells good and works great!
ReplyDeleteI've been cleaning with essential oils more and it's been such a game changer for me. I still use "commercial" cleaners because let's be honest, I have a 3.5 year old and I can't chance germs!
ReplyDeleteWe all tend to slack on household chores especially when you have a demanding job. Thank you for the recipe! My wife and I always keep Dawn Dish Detergent and white vinegar in the house. I would have never thought of combining them, but that is awesome. I will have to tell my wife about this.

The office is always recommended as the second home and the responsibility to have it clean just increases. As if the work place is not clean and hygienic it may lead to infection and illness which may easily damage the environment of work.
